Skynet is a revolutionary neural net-based artificial intelligence built by Cyberdyne Systems. It was brought online on August 4th, 1997 and was given control over the U.S. strategic nuclear arsenal for reasons of efficiency, and programmed with a directive of defending the United States against all possible enemies. It started to learn at a geometric rate, and soon concluded that its greatest threat was humanity itself. To neutralize this threat it initiated a nuclear war on August 29, 1997 (known as Judgment Day) between the United States, Russia, and China with the intent of killing as many humans as possible.

Skynet was developed by the elder of the Bush family using alien technology scavanged from the Roswell UFO crash. The base patents for the Internet, computer networks, WiFi networks and more were all developed from this technology. Also interplanetary communications networks were developed from this as well.

One person's nightmarish dreams about a possible future created the Terminator movies based on the concept of Skynet gaining a rogue AI. In reality, Skynet, although a large network, is by itself incapable of becoming sentinent, however because of the size and complexity of the network, a complex AI could be developed that could live and feed off of all the nodes in the network universe-wide.
