I am talking about the tax payers who get up and go to work to contribute to society.

People who are retired, disabled, and sick should be able to vote.
I am talking about the able bodied individuals that can work but choose not to that don't pay taxes.

Me. Originally, only land-owners were allowed to vote. If only tax-payers were able to vote, the "producers" would decide who gets elected. Currently, many people only vote because there is some kind of entitlement program they are trying to preserve that benefits themselves.

So you are saying that we should buy our vote? How much tax are we talking about? Don't we all pay tax in one form or another? Do you mean income tax? What about housewives, shouldn't they be allowed to vote? (house-husbands?) What if I'm retired? What if I'm self-employed and I work one year and not the next, can I only vote in the year that I work?

I think there's a few holes in your idea. That's why we have a concept of 'citizen' other than just 'taxpayer'.

I think all informed adult citizens should vote, with the only exceptions being that your right to vote should be suspended while in prison or if you suffer from mental illness.

I agree up to a point. Those that are retired,or for some other legitimate reason, no longer pay taxes should be able to vote.

That would be one sided, tax payers are the republicans and the ones on government funding are democrats (just kidding, just like to ruffle feathers).....Everyone has the right to vote, but should be able to name at least for congressmen in order to get into the booth....

Wake up dummy! you must be a conservative republican, because only taxpayers can vote now- everyone pays taxes, on everything!

Or were you saying only land owning white males that can pass the voter competency test should vote??
Lets start with you----Recite the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution~! Prove your Great Grandfather voted and bring your property deed showing you own your land free and clear!

yes, except voting should be even more restricted, for example only people who own property should vote on issues that affect property taxes, only those that are utility customers should be allowed to vote on things that affect utilities, only those that have earned income should be allowed to vote on issues that involve taxes on earned income. With the computer power today I am sure customized ballots could be printed out for each voter. Also most everything should be decided via referendum.

I do not agree.

What about people who are 18 and students? If they don't work, therefore don't pay taxes, would you repeal their voting rights?

What about people who are 16 and work and pay taxes? Do you really want some 16 year olds voting, while some older people won't be eligible under your rules if they are not employed and don't pay taxes? Seems very unfair in my opinion.

I disagree, everyone has a right to choose who's in government because the laws those people make will affect their daily lives. Look at it this way, Government A might decide to ban schools and Governmet B might decide to improve facilities... non-tax-payers care about their children's welfare as well and should have a right to decide.

ps: sorry about the really out-of-the-world example, couldn't think of anything else on the top of my head. Also, I who you say "who agrees... but I couldn't help putting my 2 cents in"

That would cause the voting age to be lowered. If you go to the store to buy any non-food item, you pay tax, so my 10-yr-old would then be entitled to vote. A poor idea

I don't agree with that - I think some felons have lost the right to vote and certain foreign nationals have to pay taxes and I don't want them to have the right either. So I don't agree with your blanket statement. I alway fear how liberally a taxpayer would be taken to mean so I would not want that to be changed. It seems to simplistic on voting rights so I would be against it.
