I know people who live down there near the Coastal Carolina University campus and I always go to stay with them when I go to Myrtle Beach. Conway is about 10 minutes from the actual coast, and all of the Myrtle Beach attractions. As for Conway itself, I'd say its pretty nice. I love staying down there. Hope I could help!

Edit:

Now that I think about it, I would also agree with 'Casey J' on the dirty part. I've only been through downtown Conway once, and its just like any other old. dirty town. The people who I go visit live right on the border of Conway and Myrtle Beach on a golf course, so thats what I usually see most of the time. But driving through Conway on 501, it looks fine and pretty decent to me. I guess it just depends where you are.

I stayed there and worked for a while on '05, and aside from it being less than a half an hour from the beach, it was not so great.
It's kind of a dirty town, but their is good shopping and plenty of pretty good restaurants.
