If you want to check how much hard disk space you have, then open windows explorer, right click on the drive (C:, etc) and select properties. This show show the size of that drive.
To check the size of ram easiest way it so press CNTL+ALT+DEL to bring up task manager. On task manager click on performance tab.
There should be a small box there which says Physical memory. Total label under that Physical Memory shows your RAM size in K.

Windows XP = Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information. This screen will provide a lot more useful info as well...
