Not only can you, you MUST. That's why one of the registers is generally known as the STACK POINTER.

You must use a pointer to tell where the current "top" of the stack is, in other words, where the most recent data on the stack is. This also tells you where to put the next data on the stack.

Shouldn't this question really be under computers-programming?
