They aren't supposed to be able to. Assuming that the trap is installed properly, and the line is in right, the bugs would have to hold their breath through several hours of crap water and methane gas bubbles to get from one house to the next, and most should die from that.

I'm no plumber, but I also believe there are "traps" that add to the trouble in some way or another.

If you do have bugs crawling in through the toilets, that is a serious problem, and you should definitely have a professional check out your line, because it's probably go a major crack somewhere before it reaches the main sewer line... and that means you have crap water leaking into your yard too.

Yes, they can crawl through sewer pipes, you dont have to worry too much about them getting in your house because once they reach the p-trap of your sink, well, they are trapped..Same goes for a toilet. If you are concerned, just flush the toilet once in a while and run your sink for a few seconds...If they are there, they wont be for long..
