I've got an answer for this, I have two boys and they are now teenagers and brilliant characters both of them. As far as toys go at 3 a sure fine bet is either simple agricultural machinery, or plant equipment such as Bulldozers, earth moving trucks, trucks that can carry small things like smarties for instance, tractors and so on. The other that works well are little tool kits, usually made of plastic or wood, they just love to saw away, don't worry it doesn't really saw of course!! and a plastic hammer with peg things but look like the real deal, and maybe a power drill that tightens up plastic screw threads and so on, sometimes batteries are required for the little power tools, but they do last a long time. In the case of the trucks and tractors, if you can stay away from the battery driven ones as they run down don't work and are consigned to the back of the toy cupboard, for goodness sake don't get one that has a constant wailing siren, it'll drive you crazy, and the child doesn't really get that much from a incessant noise and irritated grown ups lol The simple push along, but well made solid type are more than adequate for him. At that age it's mostly imagination that drives along the play time, and the trucks or tools are the props, as you probably know by now the more one watches them playing the more fascinating it becomes.

Remember in all cases it is inevitable the cardboard packaging will be the most entertaining at first! However at least you could make up a makeshift garage to drive the trucks into, better if you gently suggest this instead of going ahead without asking your 3 year old, you might find their language skills have taken on a new level!!

uhh lets see, you could get him a remote control car. or if you want to get him something informational but fun at the same time, you can get one of those spinny things that you pull the lever down and the arrow spins and there are all different animals and what ever the pointer lands on , lets say a piggy 4 example, it would make the sound, in this case oink oink.

Have a Merry Christmas to you and your family!
p.s. only 75 more days!

would'nt like to wast money on toys because they grow out of them very soon maybe books and colours with something to write on.save up you will need alot when he grows up at three he's still gonna look and want so if you afford it get it but make sure you are not over doing it and getting him spoilt royaly,in the long run you will have to do all the getting and he will do all the taking.i know you mean to be nice as a mum and i love you for putting him first but just see what ever you do your not over spending you got to save for a rainey day.good luck honey.

The obvious thing to say is whatever programme he loves on tv, get him the characters. He is bit young for a pet. A bike, football net, a tractor....there are so many options when you look through a shopping catalogue but it really depends on what he already has.

I'm going to do my kids gift baskets this year as money is a little tight, so I figured I'd get lots of little toys, wrap them all seperately and put in the gift basket with home made cookies, books, and little sweetie treats for them.

Is your son into any action figures or movie figures? maybe you could do him a themed present based around that?

Get him a wooden train set with Thomas the Tank engine.
My youngest is completely captivated by all the tracks and builds hefty sets with all the animals from his farm lined up alongside "to see Thomas rolling by"

Please realise that childrens' loves are like clouds. Here in force and vigorous energy today and just a misty memory tomorrow. Whatever you settle for as a gift has to come from your own perception of what he will benefit from the most.
I can almost guarantee that you will be wrong.
But if you want to be right then you will need to be the wealthiest person since Aristotle Onassis.

He would probably love a nice, safe wooden train (Brio) set. I don't know for how long tho!! You're going to have to buy some of those "evil" battery operated toys!! Don't start video games yet, trust me--I have a 9 year old little addict on my hands!!lol
