Aestetics (however you spell it) and harmony are two of Japan's main cultural elements

Japanese culture is a mixture of Chinese, Korean, and native elements.

Many elements of Chinese culture came via Korea and had a large impact on their imperial system, arts, and religion.

Modern Japan still has these various influences. Buddhism which was introduced from Korea and heavily influenced by China has elements of Japanese aestetics. Compare an austere Buddhist temple to one of the colorful ones in Korea for example.

Every month there are Shinto festivals called matsuri where participants carry around a portable shrine. Some of these matsuri represent ancient indignous fertility rituals.
