US is not celebrating any holiday this weekend. For the most part (few exceptions) US celebrates holidays on weekdays. Monday the 9th is Columbus Day. Canada celebrates Thanksgiving on Monday.

The actual date of Columbus Day is October 12. Government offices probably have Monday off, but I don't think many businesses take it off.
I don't remember when it was changed and we started celebrating it on the Monday (or closest Monday to the actual day), but its been the 12th as far back as I can remember and I'm no spring chicken!
