If you hold down the Alt key and type in 171 using the numbers key on the right hand side of the keyboard you will get ½ , 172 = ¼ so on and so forth. so how do I get the percent symbol

press the shift key + 5 with the percent symbol on top

For all symbols and a list of hex commands or others. Do the following, and it will show you a list of all available commands and what keys to press to feature them...

Click START>>>ALL PROGRAMS>>>ACCESORIES>>>SYSTEM TOOLS>>> and CHARACTER MAP. This displays most if not all available symbols for use. If it does not show the key command for typing it in, it means you cannot type it in... However you can click ANY symbol in the character MAP, and COPY and PASTE it to whatever you want, word, notepad etc...
