I called the customer service number and waited on hold for quite a long time. When I finally talked to a human and told them I wanted to close my account, they gave me a hard time about it and tried desperately to get me to keep my account open. Had to answer a bunch of questions about why and who I was changing to etc. I was getting pissed and telling him it's not really any of their business why and what I was switching to. After a bunch of this, they finally agreed to close it. They were bastards about it.

You just have to be persistent and don't be afraid get short with them if needed.

Ok, well have you seen the news lately? There was a man who called AOL to cancel his account and recorded the whole conversation. It was unbelievable. They completely disregarded what he wanted and desperately tried to keep him as a customer. You need to call their customer service line and if at all possible you should record the conversation. Then you need to say I have not used the account in over a year (to which they will prob respond, well we see some activity that has occurred recently) just ignore their response. Tell them you are recording the conversation and you are willing to get a lawyer if they keep billing you when you're asking to cancel the account. Then ask for a manager. Keep asking for a person in a higher position and keep informing them of your willingness to sue if they dont comply with your request. I have heard only TERRIBLE things about canceling AOL accounts. Oh, and even if you cant record the conversation, just tell them that you are so they get scared. It is ILLEGAL for them to keep billing you if you call to cancel so they HAVE to close the account. If they still refuse, tell them you're going to a lawyer AND the news, they would hate the negative publicity. Good luck!

I have heard of a LOT of people having this problem. It takes a lot of perseverance to finally get through to these AOL people! If you have called them and told them to cancel your account and stop billing you, and they still bill you, call your credit card company (the one that's being billed obviously) and tell them not to allow any charges from AOL.

I think that the ONLY way to cancel your account with AOL is to call customer support... They may have changed that in the 5 years since I used them.
