Is this a quirk that just caught on or is there a reason for it? Would love to know! Thanks x

it goes back to the day when men wore and used swords. The majority of men are right handed so the sword is worn on the left side, the button on the right means that there is a smooth line to draw the sword...ie no openings to get caught up in. ladies buttons are the other way to show that they are peaceful creatures!

I recall from school - we were told that womens buttons were on the other side as they had maids to dress them and it was easier to help button clothing when the buttons were opposite to mens.

I can't remember - maybe it was maids dressing the men? Anyway it was something to do with that.

Womens garments used to be buttoned in the back. They were done in mirror image of mens buttons, because it was supposedly easier to insert the button on the right side, into the button hole on the left side. When womens buttons started coming to the front, they just stayed mirror image.
.
Because men used to have servants to dress them. They would face the servants and the servants would button their clothes.

To distinguish that the design was made for a man or a woman.
Doesn't stop me, I buy lots of things in the men's department. Did you ever notice that the quality is better. Also, you can't find a good flannel shirt in the woman's department.

From what I've read, it's centuries ago in Europe when the clothes were being designed, it made it easier for men who are mostly right handed to undress women.

Back in the day, rich men dressed themselves and rich women were dressed by attendents. It was thought to be easier for the attendents if the buttons were opposite.

It comes from whilst adult males used swords as side hands, mens are opposite as we could get our stunning hands onto the hilt and draw the sword, formerly that all of them buttoned on the womans side. desire that enables.

Womens are "backward" because always had 'dressers' in the days when everything had buttons, and it was assumed most servants, like most people, were right-handed.
