with modern disks its unliklely in my view that your system is running slow is down disk defragmentation - it could be

by all means do a disk defrag

check your PC to see if you have any viruses or trojans or spyware (Spybot is pretty good on malware, and your antivirus & firewall should stop most of the other stuff). tka eany appropriate action if found

check what applications you are running, especailly those on startup. A heck of a lot of software and hardawre these days loads programs into memory that striclty speaking you dont need. These are often uselsss software, or software that can run via different means (eg sound cards, video display controlloers [ATI's Hydravision is a prime cae in point]) . to review this look at msconfig (RUN | msconfig). you can probably delete antyhting that is not overtly OS/hardware related system related if there is anything you dont recognise do a check on t'internet first. even if you do decide to no load stuff, you can always review it later on.

some applciations can have delays if you have a large amount fo fonts (check your fonts and get rid of any fonts you dont need [ ideally archive off to a zip file so you can reuse them if and when you need to])

if your system in running slow it could need a defrag or if its xp any edition then you may need to delete temp files. Totally safe! To do this properly and safely go to start search then copy and paste this *.tmp,*.chk,~*.* into search.
exactly like that . It will find a load of temp files which you dont need on your system. Ctrl a and delete them all. This will free up your system.
