My husband preferes 3 story so he can have one floor for his office work and our room.
I want 2 stories so if my baby cries I won't have to walk from the third to the second floor to the baby's room.

oh your husband is going to love that "super hot" third floor year round that will cost a mint to keep cool and comfortable. And, that heat will not do his computer any good. And his computer will over heat that third floor more. Not a good idea, in my opinion.....from the heat of my pc my scanner top melted.

2 floors are good enough (plus an attic and basement if you need that).

Some homes are taxed as to the width of the home facing the street, so you might want to choose a home that isn't that wide but choose one that is long.

My family had a 2-floor house (one room was used as an office)(plus there was f full basement and attic), 9 "huge" rooms, 2 huge baths plus a shower and 2 long and wide hallways and we 4 rambled around in there and could hardly find each other when we needed to talk with each other.

As a homeowner of a 3-story house, with two small kids...I say get a 1-story house with a basement. This way all the bedrooms are on ONE floor and you don't have to go up and down stairs in the middle of the night. With the basement, your husband can put an office down there, and when the kids get bigger you have somewhere you can send them to play.
If only I could do it over again....and make sure you have lots of closet space!!

I guess it depends how much you want to spend on an HVAC system. A single story or 2 story with a closed stairwell will be about the cheapest to get heating and AC for. You get a 2 or 3 story with no closed in stairwell and you are going to run into issues with temperature stratification. It will get really warm upstairs and really cool downstairs. It goes back to the heat rising issue. I'd stick with a single story myself.
