Wow, every brand mentions in these answers is a huge mistake.

Get a Dell where they'll give you a warranty.

While Mac would be a good choice, it's quite upmarket, or expensive.

The AMD Athlon 64 bit or the Turion 64 would be a better choice, value for money wise.

The 64 bit technology will not be upgraded for at least another four years and AMD is comparatively more robust than Intel P series.

In fact Windows Vista is aimed at the 64 bit segment. And Linux has a special 64 bit version already! And ther's a Windows XP upgrade available for 64 bit.

Qite simply put, 64 bit tech is the state of the art, replacing the slower 32 bit tech of most computers.

As you probably guessed, it's capable of twice the workload as the previous generation. Naturally, this means greater gaming options and greater graphic flexibility.

However, you must realize that all these things mean greater need for RAM space and bigger HDD capacity.

Windows XP64 needs around 512 MB of RAM for itself, so, you'll need to go in for 1GB+ onboard 64bit RAM for optimal effeciency.

AMDs "Cool and Quiet" technology is what sets it aprt from the rest, because it uses very little electricity and keeps its cool, literally!

Check out the gen on the AMD Turion Notebook at the second link given below.

I think you'll learn enough to help you make up your mind from this.

All the best.

Cheers
