The Romans actually put Jesus on the cross. So technically it was the Romans that killed him. The Romans however had very little choice in the matter because the Pharisees pressured them into it. The Romans did not want to be in anything so politically charged that is why they were sent back and fourth between Pontius Pilot and King Herod. Jesus was taken to Pilot first and pilot sent them (the Pharisees and Jesus) to Herod the ruler of only the Jews. Herod would not do anything so he sent them to Pilot the roman governor at the time and pilot said that he say no wrong in him and that he should be let free but the Jews would not have it they accused Jesus of breaking their holy laws, Which would have been true if Jesus was not truly the son of God. Now here is the kicker...the only reason that Jesus was killed then and there is that there were not enough Roman soldiers stationed there at the time if Pilot would have allow Jesus to go free that there would have been a rebellion and Pilot had not the troops to put it down at the time so the best thing for him to do, Politically that is, was to kill Jesus. Pilot being a good man tried to save Jesus' life one more time. It was tradition that once per year that the Romans releced one prisoner from prison so Pilot decide to do it then. He gave the decision to the crowd either Jesus or Barabus to released. Barabus being a thief, murder, rapist, etc. And they choose Barabus. So to avoid a riot/rebellion he gave the order to have him crucified.

The beating before his death was in large part roman soldiers possibly with order from someone or maybe just urging form the crowd. That is not and cannot be known. Following his beating Jesus was put on the cross and stayed there until his death. At which time he was pierced through the side with a spear.

The romans.

BWLJ:

Ummm. I believe he was crucified for his claims that he was the Lord or King of the jews and therefore Jerusalem. That's equivalent to claiming to be the governor of NY, which happened to be a capital offense at the time.
