You dont have to teach your child. A child is a borne learner.
You just have to behave sensibly before him and he will be a good humen being.

The most important thing for a baby from newborn to toddlers (and beyond!) is to get him/her LOTS of love, attention, and physical closeness. I have researched this, and there have been many studies to prove this. In one study, babies in an orphanage were split into two groups: the babies with higher IQ's were left in the orphanage and received little contact with people, only to be fed, changed, and bathed. The other group of babies was deemed mentall retarted and they were left in the care of other mentally retarted women that there in an institution attached to the orphanage. A year later, the children that were left in the orphanage with no human contact (the "smart" group) their IQ's were on average 30 points lower than the "mentally retarted" groups...and the "mentall retarted" groups IQ's had gained 20 points. So the smart children actually lost intelligence because they didn't receive basic neccessities such as love and attention and cuddling. They followed up both groups years later when they were all adults and the children left in the orphanage by themselves were all in adult institutions, the other group were happily married and led normal lives. It's amazing what love can do. So right now, you just need to always hold and love your chlid...you should read to him every day because thats how they grasp language. speak intelligently, dont talk baby talk..speak in normal english. Your child will learn grasping naturally. The best you can do is surround him with love and give him tummy time every day and offer stimulating toys. I can tell by your concern in asking the question you are probably already on the right track :)

Don't rush.:)
If you want a detailed info on developmental tasks, you could buy yourself a book or surf sites.
As of this time(neonate, under a month old), he still has many reflexes. Like if you place somthing in his hands, he will curl his fingers around it. But reading him stories, making him listen to music, and placing those colorful hanging chimes above his crib would surely give the bait. The clue is that he is still developing his senses. Give him pleasant stimuli.
Babies are often underestimated. They could feel, and understand emotions more than we adults do. It may feel silly to talk to a baby who cannot answer us. But believe me, they read hearts.
When he grows up a little more, he will become active, grasping everything that would interest him, he will climb windows, etc. The best thing is to lay down protection a bit and support him in his quest of knowing the world.
His mental development will be guided by other aspects but mainly physically. As i said, basically on the senses. Breastfeeding will go a long way!
Don't be discouraged if he doesn't seem to learn what you teach him. Some develop later than normal. By the way, children learn best by imitation especially on you, his mom.
So goodluck! I commend on your being a mother!:)

The best gerneral advice I have for you is to play with him/her whenever s/he is awake.
To teach her to read, you simply start reading to him/her. Make it part of your normal rountine. There is a treasure trove of babies books waiting for you to find them at the library. I also recommend reading outloud from different books of poetry, babies love to rhyme.
To teach her to grasp objects, simply place them in his/her hand. Most of the time babies have an instinctive desire to grab ahold of stuff. I recommend things that make noise when shaken and are lightweight and easy for small fingers to hold. A cheap, easy toy is a balloon filled with seeds, although you must supervise closely to make sure that it is not inadvertantly popped and consumed.
To teach him/her to speak you must talk to him/her. Constantly. Talk about what you are doing throughout the day. Talk about how much you love him/her. Count the buttons on his/her sleeper. Point out objects in the room. Anything. Just keep on talking. Also, minimize distracting noise, such as the television or the radio, especially any songs with lyrics.
To become intelligent, well you must lead by example.

They learn to grasp objects on their own. They learn to speak by listening to others speak. You don't teach a child to read until they are older than a newborn, and if you stop asking dumb questions maybe your child has a chance to become intelligent.

Reading comes much later, grasping comes naturally in a few months and intelligence level is already in place.

By you playing with her and making faces at her let her copy you. Get you boy or girl a bunch of colorful toys and books. At least thats what i have done. My daughter loves to look at the pictures and colors in her books. When i stop reading to her she starts to fuss. So i got my daughter a bunch of baby toys from walmart and walgreens. Believe me they will come in handy!!! And my daughter is Going on 5 months and i love my baby girl to death!!!!!!!

YOU JUST HAVE TO LET YOUR BABY OBSERVE THE THINGS THAT YOU DO AND HE OR SHE WILL LEARN TO DO THOSE THINGS. READ TO YOUR BABY. GRASPING COMES NATURAL. SPEAK TO THEM WITH INTELLIGENCE AND THEY WILL SPEAK INTELLIGENT.
