First, they consolidate the message of the party, come up with the platform, and put it forth to the general public.
Second, they find candidates with shared values to run for offices.
Third, they try to raise money for their candidates and their issues.
Fourth, they publicize their views, and motivate like-minded votes.
Are they corrupt? Sure, some are. Not everyone in each party is. Nor is it fair to lump everyone in a party together - ie: Tom Foley does not represent all Republicans any more than Barney Frank or Ted Kennedy or William Jefferson represent all Democrats.
Parties are a means to an end. They help group people with similar values together into larger groups to influence voting and decision making. Not bad in and of themselves, but corruption will always exist on an individual level.

The US only has two major political parties because those that control our government want it that way. They serve little purpose save for the fact they keep otherwise sensible people frothing at the mouth every election cycle over nonsensical issues. Both of the two major parties are working towards the same goals.

It turned into two sides of the coin but no in between, you have two parties with extreme views no compromise, then you have a liberal party that is so busy getting confused whether to be extreme right or extreme left that there brains burst (explains the irrational behavior and lack of anger management), then you have independants, bored wealthy people that want to add a trophy to there mantle (the presidency)

Politcal parties provide the political clout to put ideas into reality. Remember the school house rock "I'm just a bill"? That bill needed like minded people to lobby for it and to elect people who would vote for it to become a law.

They serve as a vocal and front sales for special interests group. In return these political parties gets bribery, in form of political campaign contributions and fee for speeches.
It is very dark. Yes there are some parties that are very clean and very righteousness. But due to lack of funds, their presences was not noticed.

Political parties serve to express the people's rights and views, but now I believe that it is a tool for leaders to obtain a high rank in politics.

They merely serve as the platform for their candidates to win elections in a democracy. Otherwise, they are irrelevant to the society. In my own country, they promote corruption, brigandage and violence.
