Did they really send it three days ago? Or do they have the CLOCK set incorrectly on their computer?

Or, maybe they were using Outlook Express, and did not hit SEND. So the email was waiting to be sent for three days, when they finally went into their email program. Then it sent.

Basically, it is not YOUR issue, but theirs.

Yes, e-mail can be delayed for many hours, but it is unlikely that it would take more than 24 hours. They would have gotten error messages if it could not send for 4 hours or more.

Mail delivery can be delayed at most by 5 days (it is usual parameter for mail servers). There can be several reasons: since your posting jumps through several servers, one of them can be down or too busy for a long time; mailbox of your addressee can be full, etc. Your SMTP server will retry for 5 days to send mail.
