Depends on the acculturation process.

Was it the elephant's great, great grandparents that came from Africa or was the elephant born in America?

Did the elephant totally miss the culture of his ancestors and want to learn more about it? Therefore the elephant identified with the African culture the same way as perhaps "Italian-Americans" do Italy?

Or was the elephant trying to right an injustice done to him by declaring himself not "American" but rather "African American"?

I guess that elephant could call itself whatever it wants if it gave the elephant a good feeling about himself.

What the heck! It's a free country - right?

What a great question! But I think that it will still be an African Elephant. African Americans are people whom were born in America that are of African origin. Now, if the elephant had a baby, that may be an African American elephant!

Cute question. but if an elephant was African and stayed here in the U.S. It still would be an (elephant). Lets say for an instance it wasn't just an elephant, but Afro-American. How about all the pets people bring home from such places as London, or Africa, etc. Instead of a Basengi (from Africa), would it be called Afro-Dog? Or the fancy cats they bring home from China? Would it be China-Cats?

LOL... No. Ironically the ones in the Zoo are called African elephants. Now if a couple of them were to have a child - the baby elephant might be called this. (It would also become a US citizen!!!)

Sounds to me like you have an agenda against black people who can be called anything they want/ Your question regarding an elephant was a coverup for a black person. There are Irish Americans, Hispanic Americans and the list goes on so there isn't anything you can do about it.
