We live near a forest. The chickens are in a shady cool area. There is a coop and nesting place.

the chickens need to be in a warm area otherwise they wont lay beacause they lay in spring-summer because its warm. you can trick them in the winter and make it feel like summer in the coop so you get eggs all year long

I've had 15 chickens lay 12-14 eggs a day, ( one was a rooster) in the cold new york winter, I gave them cooked mash mush, letting it coool to baby bottle temperature, and this worked as an old German chicken farmer said. The chicks need to get good vibes from you also or when you let them free range or they hide eggs. Some will indicate that they want to set and hatch, so you need to watch them and learn their verbal and body language. Also give them oyster shell, ang grit for stronger egg shell and digestive purpose, now my flock follows when I cut the grass to chase and eat the grass hoppers. A lot of people think that chickens are dumb, but at least they know what they are supposed to do and learn quickly not to be fooled, when they are born they already know about hawks and what to do when the rooster sounds a hawk warning, and obey the mother hen.

They may need to molt. Try withholding water for a couple of days. This will put them under stress and cause them to start molting. They will lose many of their feathers over the next couple of weeks, but after that they will grow them back and should begin laying again. That is unless they are just getting too old. You may need to get rid of them and purchase some younger birds. If you need to get rid of them, just leave the coop door open and let them wander into the forest. The animals of the forest will take care of them for you. It is not cruel, it is life.

Firstly, they wont lay untill it is warmer. So feed them up during winter so they dont die off. And you will need to feed them a good quality of laying pellets in the summer. But the eggs are lovely
