I am living in Italy for a semester. I bought a bottle of Absolut Vodka from the supermarket yesterday, put it in the freezer like I always do, and when I opened up my freezer the vodka in the bottle was frozen almost completely solid, I'd say at least 95% frozen. I was under the impression that it was impossible for hard liquor to freeze, and have never seen it happen before. What gives?!

It still has the plastic seal around the cap, nobody could have tampered with it. Additionally, it still has the official Italian liquor and tobacco stamp on it, so it seems unlikely that it is fake. It's marked as 80 proof, just like always. Any other ideas?

Also, liquor freezes at -175 degrees Fahrenheit, there is no way my freezer is that cold.

You've been sold fake booze.

Proper vodka will not freeze in a domestic freezer

Maybe the vodka sold in Italy is lower in alcohol content? You woudn't think so, but I can't think of any other reason (unless someone sold you something in an Absolut bottle that wasn't really Absolut vodka.....because you're right, it shouldn't freeze)

80 proof is 40% alcohol. That means 60% water. One of the ways that people used to concentrate alcohol was to freeze the mash. The water would freeze and they would pour off the concentrated alcohol.

What froze in your bottle was the water. What didn't freeze was the alcohol. And, yes, this is a way to separate the two.

Someone took the vodka out, and replaced it with water. Take it back to the store and get another bottle.

Perhaps you have a sub-zero freezer. Maybe it is a bottle of Absolute Water.
