SF fans ( or rather fen in SF speak) are rather unique in their drive to get together. There are numerous conventions known as cons where you can meet other fen. There are usually at least three entertainment streams going on simultaneously. These include:-
Fancy dress parades
Panel discussions e.g. the panel are given various 'alien articfacts' and required to deduce what the aliens and their civilisation were like.
Turkey readings - usually for charity. Members of the panel read out awful passages until someone in the audience pays them to stop (or continue)
A room full of book dealers including lots of imported American books usually a lot cheaper than UK copies and many which are not published in the UK
Book auctions
Art auctions. Sometimes you can get the original painting used on the cover of a book.
You can also buy (or sell) items like jewellery, badges, filksong books and tapes (see below_
Lots of real ale although the Viking contingent seem to have dwindled lately.
Filk singing. Amateur musicians singing new words to old tunes. Some are dreadful and some are very funny. There are a few talents who write their own music which often gets ripped off very quickly.
Lots of well known authors such as Terry Pratchett, Iain Banks, Anne Mc'Caffrey attend the cons, serve on the panels, give talks on their work and do book signings.
After the official entertainment is over the techies often screen late night films or there are room parties - rooms with jacuzzis are favoured.
Usually a grand dinner and fireworks to finish off.

The Worldcon is the biggest and best and is usually held in the States but there is a rule that it must be held somewhere else I think one in four times. I went to one in Glasgow about 10 years ago. In the UK try searching for Eastercon, Unicon. There is one specifically for Star Trek fans another for Dr Who fans and one for filksingers. The SF community tend to sneer at trekkies but I notice they still know all the answers in the quizzes..

Longleat has a Dr Who exhibit, and collectable fairs normally have actors/actresses that have appeared in various films and series. Check the web.
