every time i get on my laptop i have to cut my desktop on, I'm using a router through my dsl. What steps do i need to take?

Hi,
You shouldn't have to turn on your desktop if you are connected to the internet through a router, be it wireless or not. Something may not be hooked up corectly. Are you sure it is not a DSL modem and not a router?

If your router is also a switch you are fine just add another wire, otherwise change your router for one that is also a switch and does network address translation. Also make sure that your laptop has a NIC card in addition to the wireless card and hook up using the NIC card.
