You should never change more than 50% of your fish's water at one time. If you do, you lose all the beneficial bacteria that help keep it clear. The cloudiness is a normal part of the nitrogen cycle and will clear on it's own in a few days. Just change 25-30% of the water every week.

A betta needs about 2-3 gallons of water that is heated and filtered.... like all tropical fish.

Bettas are not the only fish that can breath from the atmosphere, they are only one member of a family called anabantoids that have a special chamber in their head that extracts O2 from the air. The gouramis fall in that family too. There are also some catfish that can get their O2 from the air, the walking catfish is a notable one.

Most of the rest of those answers are from people who have no clue how to take care of bettas (pronounced bet-tah, not bay-tah).

Bettas are tropical fish from southeast Asia (hot) and need temps in the area of 78-80 degrees. If you want to kill it slowly, just keep it in a small bowl and the cold temps and stress will do the job in a few months.

Yes, bettas are carnivorous, they eat insects and larvae that end up in the water. A good high protein (45-50%) flake food is better for them than those stupid pellets. It is more easily digested and causes no blockage in the intestines when the low temp causes their metabolism to slow down to where their digestion is almost non-existent.

All tropicals need filters and heaters. Goldfish are the only commonly sold fish that do not need heaters.

Fantastic!!! Betta do exceptional in neighborhood tanks, virtually each freshwater tank i have ever had has had a betta in it. I'd move with a few brilliant and lovely Swordtails and platies (a million male two ladies or every style) and three cory cats (corydoras) some of these fish are hardy and are available in all forms of colours. The platies and swords are livebearers which imply they breed quite often and feature are living toddlers, so if you do not wish any toddlers simply get two-three ladies of every, you would get all men however they surely would battle it simply relies although (similar to men and women all of them have their possess personalities). I may not get anymore fish than the ones. I'm asuming you might have a well clear out, you must constantly attempt to get one that's one measurement up from the dimensions tank its made for. So you probably have 10 gallon measurement clear out get a 20 gallon measurement clear out alternatively, additionally over the facet filters are the satisfactory, undergravel filters are kinda crappy I could now not advocate the ones. You may also want decholrinator Stress coat is exceptional additionally you're going to must get a water checking out package someday it's going to aid you hold monitor of your ammonia phases aswell as nitrite and ph. I would move on and on. Hope this is helping!!!

Just use a simple little betta bowl instead of a tank. That way when you change the water(all of it), you don't have to worry about poop under the gems/gravel getting stirred up. Bettas don't like a lot of water space anyway. They like small bowls by themselves and are the only fish that doesn't need oxygenated water because they can breathe at the top of the water.
P.S. Don't feed tropical fish flakes because bettas are carnivorous(it is the wrong diet & very messy). I use betta pellets which are very clean. Only feed 1-2 pellets per day.

You probably didn't clean the algi off of the rocks. What you do is you clean the bowl and you stir the water around which kicks up the algi and sometimes poop. You should empty the bowl and keep swishing the water around untill it's not the brownish green color anymore. Also let the new water that the fish will be in sit for 24 hours. Otherwise it might kill her! Good luck cleaning :D
