I ran into a large wooden chest/box in my apartment, and hit my shin really hard. I hit it so hard, that I buckled over and nearly blacked out from the pain (I compare it to being it with a baseball bat in the shin ... although that has never happened to me). I got up soon after, and could walk fine (even though it still hurt). I iced it for awhile. I soon noticed that I had a bump where I hit my shin, right below my knee. The bump has been there for over a week, and the bump is as hard as a bone (so it's not just swelling). Although the pain is gone, the bump is still there, and as big as it was when it first happened. What is it? Will it go away? Am I stuck with it? Is it a "bone bruise" (what is that anyway)? Let me know, please. Thanks.

Anyone else out there? Definately not hematoma. Can't offer a best answer for "go see a doctor" ... why ask the question here if I could ask a doctor?!?

i've had it happen, but i got kicked in the shin while playing soccer. It could have been some microtrauma, like little splinterings of your bone that got free and started forming the bump as the bruise was healing. Anyways, when it happened to me the trainer had me rub it out, well try to rub it out. use some lotion and just rub on it...if it's still sore it hurts, but that can help break it up....if it doesn't work...then there's nothing to do about it. If nothing works and it doesn't hurt...then go with it and be happy you didn't break anything :)

Marnie is dead on correct. I have the same problem. Mine is associated with flat feet, and that causes shin splits. This can be aggravated if you are, like you say, overweight and out of shape, like I am. There are many things you can do. 1. See a foot specialist about some good quality shoe inserts. Tell him what you are doing. 2. Stay off the treadmill and use the bike. That can just as easily get the heart rate up and takes the stress and impact off your knees, shins, feet, all your joints, really. 3. Be patient. If you take some time on weight training building up the muscles and revving your metabolism to burn more fat, you'll notice an improvement in how you feel, and less pain MOST IMPORTANTLY - see a doctor about anything you are going to do if its causing you pain. A personal trainer never hurts either, if they are good.

A bruised bone can take along time to heal. Wait awhile longer & then if there it is still there or there is pain best to see a Dr. Hitting that part of your leg is an experience in pain.

you could have a hairline fracture but if it's not painful it seems that maybe the osteocytes (bone cells) generated in that specific area at a rapid pace.

I don't know, but it seems to have stayed a long time. My advice is to see a doctor.
