Unfortunately there isn't a lot that you can do unless you can prove that your hours were decreased due to some sort of prejudice. I am surprised they have allowed you and your son to work together because most companies have rules against hiring relatives in at least the same area if at all, which is perfectly legal. As far as them trying to make you sign a letter saying your hours have been increased, don't sign it and save your pay check stubs, those are your proof of what you've worked and been payed.

I would say that you start first by looking through your company handbook or guidelines with regards to work hours or work schedules. Also, if you have a copy of the job description provided to you when you initially started working with the company that states that you will adhere to a specific schedule, that would be useful in going over this topic with an HR Manager.

That said, depending on the type of industry you are in, it may be based on the availability of work, so if indeed there is no work for you to do, they have no choice but to pay you for the number of hours actuallly worked which, of course, may be less than the typical 40 hour work week.

I would go talk with a lawyer and see what is your rights.
What was on the application? Did it say anything about
having to do this without any notice?
I would take legal action if he was not to do that.
The very best of luck to you.
