Review the lecture supplied. THe AlCl3 is a good catalyst for producing the carbocation needed for the reaction. Other things can do it, but they act stochiometrically, not as catalysts, and are not as useful because of that. It is also a fairly general reaction that can work with many hydrocarbon groups.
