Habit probably.
If not that then maybe because they are using a "lay" term, rather than the academic (and correct) word so that non specialists will understand them.
If not that - laziness, preference or ignorance.

As the reference shows, this term is used either in fiction or to refer to a concept which has been invented or proposed so that another theory makes (more) sense. One can make a good case that there is no evidence to support it. This is a good reason for scientists to not use the term.
