It was a flight recorder off a plane that had crashed. It had recorded the conversations the pilots had after the bombings. They were flying blind and telling each other where they were seeing mushroom clouds, (Denver, Atlanta, etc...) and a couple of jets flew by them also. The pilot of the plane that the box came off of tried to land but couldn't control it and crashed. Another plane was heard also that said they landed somewhere north of Kansas. The one that landed was the one that Emily's fiance was on.
Too bad you missed that part. It's a great show isn't it?

It was the fight recorder (black box) from a plane that Jake (Skeet Ulrich) found downed on the highway. He found two planes one that had crashed and on the landed on the road. On it they heard that some of the pilots saw the mushroom clouds and the air traffic control was gone. The planes still in the air were flying blind. Two pilots started talking to each other that one of them found a road to land on and told the other one to follow. The first plane landed with no problem the other one crashed. In the background of all that Jake heard another pilot say that her was the fight that Emily’s (Ashley Scott, Jake’s ex-girlfriend) fiancé was on and that they landed in a field somewhere and that on one was seriously hurt.
