You can only if the cd is a cd rw. Plus your software for your cd writer needs to be rewritable capable.

Qoute:

How to Erase Files From a CD-RW Disc
To erase files from a CD rewritable disc:
1.Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop.
2.In My Computer, right-click the CD recording drive, and then click Open. Windows displays a temporary storage area where files are held before they are copied to the CD. Files or folders that are located in the temporary storage area are listed in the Files Ready to Be Written to the CD box.
3.In the CD Writing Tasks pane, click Erase this CD-RW. The Welcome to the CD Writing Wizard dialog box is displayed. After you click Next, the Erasing the CD dialog box is displayed and the progress bar displays the progress of the process.
4.When the process is finished, you receive a message in the notification area and you can use the CD-RW disc.Note: Not all CDs are erasable. If the CD that you are using is not erasable, for example, then this feature is not available.

If you are trying to use a CD as a backup for your files --

I have two burners -- a Samsung and a Dell. Both require that you use a CD/RW, and it must be first formatted with the software provided by that burner. Additionally, if you plan on taking the CD/RW to another PC, the receiving PC would not be able to read it without the reading program provided by your burner's software.

If you merely copied data to a CD, the file is probably read only. You may be able to delete the entire file, but you will not be able to edit it. You can try to take a copy of the file, paste it on your hard drive, edit it there, and save it to the same name on the CD.

Better to backup on a flashdrive. The price is way down and they work like floppies.

You can't. you can highlight it and push delete and then it won't show (that is if it's a CD-R or CD-RW) but the info will still be their for advanced users to find.
If it's very private data you should destroy the CD physically.

If it says "CD-R" on the label, you can't. If it says "CD-RW", you can replace data BUT the CD can't have been finalized yet. You're probably better off just getting a new CD.

unless the CD is a Read Write Rewritable CD, then you cannot delete anything from it. My recommendation is to reburn a CD with the information omitted that you want to delete.

Unless your CD is RW (read, writable) you won't be able to delete info. Best way to delete the data is to destroy CD...that is unless you want to save other data on the disc.

NO NO NO !!!

Thats nerver gonna happen for sure! Data inside a CD is considered READ ONLY, which means you can only access it and cannot alter any information inside...

Better burn it to another CD excluding the information you want to delete........

The cd has to be RW. Your cd burning software should have that opition on it. But the cd must be RW. I find it easier just to get a new cd. It's faster and cds are so cheap.

If it is CD-ROM (Compact Disk Read Only Memory) Then there is no way to delele information other than destroying the CD. But if it is CD-RW (Compact Disk Read-Write-ReWrite), then you can use cd burning softwares, like nero burn to delete informations.

you delete it the same as you would any other file, on a cd-r you cannot reuse that space for instance let say your disc is 650 mb and you delete a 50 mb file the most you can put is 600 mb now, a cd-rw you can after you reformat it
