If they're chewing tobacco, they're learning it from men....men who run the risk of mouth and throat cancer...bad risk, too. It's not ladylike, but then there aren't many real ladys left. Women are losing something...and have lost something over the last 50 years and it could be argued that losing this isn't so bad. However, many women were inspired to be feminine and well, ladylike at one time. Not so anymore. Believe me, I want women to be powerful and have equal pay, etc, but the charm of a feminine woman seems to be declining in today's society. Women want less and less of it or aren't learning it as they once did. Spitting, whether it's a man or and woman, isn't sanitary and makes that person look less educated and less civilized. Spitting in anger is disgusting. Spitting to clear ones mouth is best left to the bathroom or into some kind of disposable paper product. Sure, my answer is a bit old fashioned. Sure, expecting women to pose themselves a bit more feminine seems like something from out of the past. But there is a dignity associated with it that so often seems lacking in women today.
There doesn't appear to be any "finishing" schools today for women. And men certainly aren't being taught to be gentlemen anymore. These civilizing processes have gone by the wayside and it's a shame. Maybe one day they'll come back in style, changed certainly to fit that future time, but none the less returning dignity and style to women and men. The "rules" were once written by the likes of Emily Post and others. Consulting these mavens of ettiquette again wouldn't be such a bad idea.

People who spit in public are a bit uncouth. Polite society does not do this.
