As a practical matter maturity shows itself in the ability to think thing through before either acting or speaking. It takes the consequences of ones actions into consideration and weighs the options. It is not selfish and can give more than it receives when necessary. It can be as small as picking up your socks without having to be asked, or as large as letting the mother of a dying child cry in your arms, without looking for a pat on the back for it.
The mature person takes responsibility for their actions simply because that's the right thing to do.
I think that pretty well covers it.

Maturity is defined as personal growth. The ability to understand and accept, admitting your faults and trying to make up for them, the ability to control your actions even under extreme anger, the ability to forgive--these are some signs of maturity.

A mature person is one that has put away childish things. Neither age nor social standing nor education has anything to do with it.
