Go to Circuit City, Office Depot, Staples, etc. where people will discuss with you your needs. (talk with all of them before you decide....if you have a credit card (and I presume you do because you mentioned online shopping) use that, and remember that in paying ahead you get rebates of a few hundred dollars. I don't know if you can return items on sale from Christmas holidays but you might want to ask that. If you order during Christmas or Thanksgiving you might get a deal if you are sure that computer is what you really want). Buy the latest version.....and, here's something important: make sure you get "reinstall" disks, even if you have to pay $20 extra to buy them as they are a lifesaver. The XP version for a computer is good. If you buy any programs they must be compatible with the pc version you have. Some people like laptops and need them for work (they have a battery and have had problems with many of the laptops being vunerable to overheating and fire). Be sure to purchase a "surge protector" for your computer.

It's better to talk with the store (where you can return it if it doesn't do what you want or need). One of the things you appear to be asking for is speed. Speed is also determined on what ISP or other connection you use.

When you have an internet connection it's "normal" to access shopping.

If there is a package deal (like I got several years ago) it comes with audio, and a scanner. And then I bought a printer (and it comes in handy. ink is expensive and you'll need to buy both black and white, plus color ink). Of course you will need a package of cd's as well for saving your information.

I first invested with HP and they were very good about replacing it when it had glitches, they would send me a box and I'd send it to them for free, they would fix it and return it to me, and they not only extended the warranty, but then supplied me with a compaq presario later on.

It depends on what you are looking for in a computer. The best place I think for On line comparison shopping is at Pricewatch.com. There you can get a price range on the different type of computers. They also give you a brief description so you start to have an idea what it in there. Most companies are about the same as far as computers. the difference is where it comes to the type of video and sound cards (if you're a gamers) and tech support. Areas like wireless network card and hard drive space depends on personal preferences.

I'm a gateway girl myself. I have had no problems with Gateway and swear by them. Visit www.gateway.com for deals and you can also select the base model of computer you want and then customize it to have the specific options you want and nothing else. Also check www.dell.com right now I see they are having some good deals, my friend just got one that I customized for him for 800 total. I wouldn't suggest buying one at a local store that you find in your paper on sale because your stuck with just what they have been customized to at the store, a base model. Its always great to have some imput on the programs and software you want to your own needs.
