That would be a "Jake Brake" that is the brake on a Semi tractor that uses the engines compression to slow the tractor-trailer down in a hurry, that is why you sometimes hear them on the high highway make a loud rumbing noise when they are coming up to a stop

Are you talking about a Jake Brake that are used in the motor of Semi Trucks?

If you are a Jake Brake or Engine Retarder in the older model tucks is designed to slow the motor down hypothetically saving on the breaks when going down a steep mountain. However, if you are in to high of a gear when you use it, it does nothing more than make a lot of noise. When using the Jake Brake you should be in a low enough gear that will hold the truck back on its own, then when you engage the Jake Brake it should keep you at the correct speed without heating the breaks up causing brake failure and loss of control of the truck. For example lets say you are going down the Grapevine in California, the posted speed limit for semi trucks is 15 or 20 MPH, that is to slow and will cause your breaks to over heat, causing the breaks to smoke and eventually fade. If you stop at the top, which you should always, you are now in full control of the truck. When you get to 4th MAYBE 5th gear and your RPM's are sitting right you then engage the Jake Brake which is a switch on the dash, you can them hold the speed limit without touching the brakes. By the time you get to the bottom of the hill you have done it safely and with cool breaks.

Dirty Dog you are right. It takes a real ignorant person to use a Jake Brake to save others lives, you are the man!

I have no idea what a Jake Rake is.

Answers for "jake brakes" correct except the one from Dirtydog. Any trucker who knows anything would tell you a professional driver would never use the jake brakes in adverse weather conditions.
