My daughter loves basketball and I am just how well she is doing. I played basketball but I didn't start this young and I just don't know how well she should be doing. I taught her how to dribble and that's all for now. I'm not trying to push her, but would like to know if she is about where she needs to be for her age. Her latest record is 140 times in a row right-handed and 30 (needs work, I know) times left-handed. She practices everyday and is just now starting to be able to move forward and dribble at the same time. Should I put her in organized sports at this age or would it ruin the fun for her by making it too competitive, too young?

Don't worry, I have never worried about being politically correct. I know very well how good organized sports are for kids. I played them all my life. But I never started that young. But I have seen kids that were so competitive is was ridiculous. I know what good sportsmanship is and will instill that in my daughter. When I see a good play made it doesn't matter what team makes it, I applaud my opponents just as easily as my teammates. I want to win, but I want to have earned it, so I like it when my opponents play well. And I am confident she will be the same way.

I have seen some great answers on here. Thanks everyone!

The last thing you said is correct - she's at an age for fun, not competition. It's sounds like these are your ideas.

I'd think a four and a half year old girl would be doing well if she could dribble the ball two or three times with her dominant hand, and capture it with her non-dominant hand.

I don't think you'd spoil it for her by giving her a game. She sounds like she enjoys what she's doing very much. I'm not sure why everyone worries about "competitve" settings. Sportsmanship teaches how to win and lose, and that it is fine to do so. Being overly protective of competition simply impeeds the ability to lose graciously (few people mind success - though some people never learn to deal with that either).

Take her to a couple games for kids. If she says she'd like to do that, follow her lead. Sports are great. It is a shame they've been PC'd to oblivion. What's wrong with being good at something?

"Should I put her in organized sports at this age or would it ruin the fun for her by making it too competitive, too young?"

Easy. Ask her. If she doesn't know for sure, take her somewhere where she can take a free lesson. Who knows, the competitive element and the fun of being in a group might make her motivation skyrocket even further.

Good luck, I hope we're talking about a future female Michael Jordan here.

Leagues formed for children at this age are designed to be fun for the child while teaching the importance of team work. I say let her play if she chooses to! Basketball games for kids at this age are not officiated as stringently and it allows the children to have fun while fostering a little healthy competition. It sounds like she is doing great & is very determined!

i used to coach(teach) 5 and 6 year olds. i could take up to 7 at that age, by myself. most cant dribble at that age. she is ahead of the curve. so, find a place that does instruction, that doesnt keep score, and is fun for the kids. i would teach one saturday of dribbiling, the next week would be passing, then defense and so on. i would have a dribbling game at the end of practice. or a game to utilize what they were taught that day. on the 7th saturday, they would play a game and use all their skills. it was fun....
