Yes, but it can also go undetected, even by those who have equipment designed to spot authenticity. There are various qualities of cubic zirconia as well as diamonds. So, lower quality cubic zirconia is very easy to detect. If it is a large stone it is very easy to tell with the naked eye. But if the stones are really tiny it is difficult to tell. I purchased a cubic zirconia ring from Sears for $500 in1999 with a lot of very small stones cumulating 5 ct. Subsequently, at a pawn shop in 2002, I was interested in how they determine the difference between the two. They had a large selection of jewelry on display labeled cz or diamond. I had my ring tested without saying what it was. They used the eyepiece thing and a "diamond tester", and informed me the ring had diamonds and 14kt gold! It did have 14kt gold, but not 5 carats of diamonds. I asked what the "diamond tester" did, and they said it measured the density of the stones, with diamonds being more dense than cz. The device beeps upon measuring the density of a diamond. So- I think it's hard to say yes or no, depending on the actual skill & knowledge of the analyzer. If presented to an educated & experimented analyzer the difference is detectable.

Obviously the biggest difference is in the price. They look very similar and you can certainly get more CZ for your money. It's not as well known that CZs actually sparkle a bit more than Diamonds.

If your reasons for considering CZ over Diamond are financial, then make sure you don't go for one that is so large that your friends are quick to consider what you have purchased. Look at the Diamonds available and opt for CZs of similar size.

If it is a quality issue, then honestly Diamonds would win hands down. It's certainly worth paying that bit extra for the real thing, even if you have to go for something slightly smaller.

Yes, but, for a person like us, it can be hard. Go to a good Private Reputable Jeweler, not those Chain Store that have just people working like us. Look at some of their stuff and talk with the Man/Woman that KNOW!!!! The places I buy from are just small little shops and they do have fair prices and usually very nice quality. Now, here what I lead up to; The ones I know showed me how to look through one of those Loupe's (Not sure of Spelling, it a small magnifier), and then a Microscope and explained what I was seeing, really cool.

Diamonds cut glass and are a bit more shiny at the edges. And then there is the price. Be a bit different. What is the favourite stone? Have the ring personalized for your beloved. For example my husband had one made with opals (hidden depths), a ruby (fire) & emerald. (life) in a silver setting. (I hate gold.) His was a white gold wolf's head (spirit animal)with a dimond chip for the eyes.
It all depends on what message you want to say.

prob hard to tell by just looking at it! some cubic zirconia's look just as shiny and pretty as diamonds...don't know if they look so good after years and years but they do in the beginning.

Most can only be told thru a jewlers eye piece.
If you so get a fake don't make it to big or your
friends won't believe you, expecially if you don't have
the money to spen on a real one!
Otherwise go for you....

Drop it in a glass of water. If it disappears, it is a diamond.

The jeweler has a little monitor that they can touch to the stone and it will tell if it is real or not.

If you buy from a reputable shop, this will not be a problem.
