VIbrating beds are practically gone by now. They were a big deal in hotels many years ago, and usually went by the trade name "Magic Fingers". The idea (on paper) was that the worn-out, tired traveler could use a massage and that this could be provided by the bed. Pop a quarter in the slot, turn the knob and hey! Mechanical Massage!

Instead, what you got was the entire bed shaking like you were in an earthquake. I actually got a chance to use one (this was about 20 years ago) and it was more unnerving than relaxing.

The idea behind water beds is that they're better for you because they give equal support to all parts of your body, whereas regular mattresses can't. Nowadays water beds have all kinds of baffles and such inside to keep them from sloshing too much. They're really quite comfortable once you get the heater to the right temperature (and yes, you definitely need a heater, unless you enjoy the hypothermia).

I don't know, maybe because people in the UK are more conservative. Vibrating chairs, not beds are more popular now in the USA.
As for waterbeds, they are not very popular here in the north of the USA as well. Our climate is almost like yours, and a waterbed has to be heated constantly in the cold envirnonments, which is costly.
Waterbeds are more popular in the south.
On the other hand, I am almost sure that the percentage of people using vibrating beds is the same in UK and in the USA. USA just has more population, more consumers.

Vibrating beds are a thing of the past and only seen in movies now. I never quite got that either. Water beds aren't quite as popular; as they used to be, and from my experience, they are much easier on your back.

Dragon will make Ichi's bed vibrate... :)

Dragon think people who travel alone sometimes like having vibrating bed to relax (however they want to do that).

Dragon not understand waterbeds though. Waterbeds leak when Dragon claws puncture them. Dragon prefer bed not move.
