The Time Traveller's Wife was inspired by the love story of the author's grandparents, her grandmother having survived her grandfather by a good 30 years. It is the love story of Henry and Clare, a young couple living in Chicago. Henry (31) is a librarian and Clare (23) an art student and their lives together are complicated by a mystifying and exasperating genetic condition (convincingly called chrono displacement disorder) which causes Henry to take off at no notice at all on a journey through time (always within his life span) often with the predicament of having to find clothes at the other end of the journey! While Clare is left wondering if he is safe from harm, Henry takes off on his travels, with journeys which are sometimes harrowing, other times amusing. Henry meanwhile tries to live as normal a life as he can, i.e. a steady job, love, good friends, children of his own. Clare had known from childhood that that she was destined to marry Henry, as he had travelled to her childhood from what was then, to her the future, i.e. the time when she would have grown up and they would be married. Henry, on the other hand, has no memory of this early meeting.
It is really about deep love, separation and about how time dictates so much that goes on in our lives.

Very complex, brilliantly constructed and a good read.

It's an odd read and yet a very good and smart read too.

I'll have to say that nearing the end, I'd only read a page at a time and then put it down not wanting the story to be over but savoring every word. I think I stretched the last chapter over a week.

It's OK. Some people rave over it but I'd say it's a good interesting read with a large number of loose ends.

It gets 4 stars from Amazon US and 4 and a half from Amazon UK. I'd give it a 3.

It's about a man with a genetic condition which causes him to travel through time and how he meets his wife, how she meets him and about their life together and apart.

The Time Traveller's Wife is one of my favorite books. Ultimately, it is a love story. Just know that it jumps back and forth in time. Very good book.

A lot of people seem to enjoy it. Myself, I have tried reading it several times but have found it very boring. The farthest I've gotten before putting it down was about to page 60. It just didn't work for me.

But to each his own.

Was given this book and felt very sceptical about it. Read it and found it quite compelling though totally bizarre. Touching love story but so much more besides.

I cried. It took some time to get into it but once I did I loved it.
