The reason this happens (and can also happen with Scandisk) is that a program starts accessing the hard drive and thus interrupts Defrag. You can just go reboot your computer into SafeMode then run Defrag and it shouldn't happen. While in SafeMode most of the little programs that run in the background don't get loaded. Therefore they wouldn't be able to interfere. To get into SafeMode start tapping the F8 key while the computer is first turning on. You'll get a menu that you can choose SafeMode from.

Restart the computer and press F8 before the Windows logo appears to login in safemode.

Run Scandisk first then run Defrag.

Best wishes,

pup

This is a bug in the Windows ME edition and sadly the worst OS that smart guy Gates sold to the public. The other suggestions might work. If not strongly suggest your change operating system.

defrag will not work if anything is open, you have to go to start, run, then type in this,, msconfig click on the start up tab, then uncheck everything that is checked off, then click ok, when the next choice appears, select exit without restarting, then you should be able to run defrag

I had the same problem. There was something else running at the same time. My computer tech. neighbor told me to look at my task bar, even the hidden icons, and to close out everything that I could. Lo and behold, the weather bug was this issue. Good luck.

Virus protection, pop up blockers, firewall programs and cookie blocker programs will stop it from working. Shut them all down before you defrag.

Try using diskeeper to defrag, it's much quicker: http://www.diskeepereurope.com/
