Well reading is my hobby. I love reading books. When I started reading the first book - harry potter and the philosopher's stone, the first 10 - 15 pages didn't seem interesting for reading. So I returned the book to my library. But when i went to see the movie I was just mad behind that film. From then i took more interest in reading Harry Potter books and even watching the film.

Like some others here, I had not heard of Harry Potter until I read an article about the casting of the three young actors. My great-niece was 13 at the time, and I think she read the book well before the movie was released. She saw the film, then wanted me to see it with her. I'm usually very critical of books-turned-into-films and since I knew it was a series, I wanted to read the books before I got involved in the films.

Let's just say I was over 40 when I read the first book, which I thought was outstanding. Then I went to see the movie and have been a fan ever since.

I'm buying the soft cover books but in the larger size format, not the regular paperback size. No first edition, but hindsight is always 20-20 vision. My manager is from the UK and I spent 2 weeks in London when I joined his group. It was 1997, which was the year of publication, and I could have had that first edition, if only I'd known!!

Thanks for a great question!!

I started reading it just after Christmas of 99. My husband bought me the first three books for Christmas. I was pregnant and had quit my job so I had lots of time to read. I didn't realize at the time that Harry Potter was the big deal he has become. I knew people liked the books but had no idea it was this extreme. It is cool because the baby I was pregnant with is now 6 and we've been reading all the books together. We're currently in the middle of book 5.

I started reading it when it first came out. I can't remember how old I was or what year it was off hand ( I think I was 12 or something like that)..but I've always been a fan. I love harry potter. I have an original too. I just recently found it at a garage sale for a buck...what a steal,eh?! Mine is paperback as well. I'm actually quite sad that our adventures will be ending soon....

i started when the fourth one came out. i was in the airport and all the bookstalls were filled with bright coloured 4th book which was just alluring. I had to control my self from not buying and be contented with buying the first one which was in paper back but as you said with a guy with brown hair. the write up on the back didn't at all correlate with the story also. but i doubt if that was the first edition. after the first i bought the other 3 in a months time

now i own the 5th and 6th first editions though i dont think they are worth much.
