I think the difference is that most of the people from 9/11 took a while longer to forgive, if they forgive at all and the Amish immediately forgave because they are true to their faith. Most people of all faith find it hard to practice one of the most fundamental parts of their religion which is forgiveness. They say that they are Christians but when it is time to show that they truly are they don't. I saw one woman who stated that she didn't feel that the Amish were normal people because they so easily forgave, she didn't feel that it was a normal reaction. I say that it may not be a normal reaction to most, even I don't think that I would be able to forgive someone who intentionally murdered a member of my family however for them it is their way of life. I feel that their ability to easily forgive makes them better people than most of us. My deepest sympathy goes out to them and I wish the media would leave them alone so that they can continue on with their lives and properly grieve for their loves ones. The media doesn't know when to let up.

I think that there are key societal differences between the victim's families in these two tragedies.

On 9/11, the world trade center towers one and two were toppled. This led to the deaths of almost 3,000 people. Many of these people were Jewish or Christian, and yet, as part of modern American society, mostly held secular beliefs. Their families suffered the loss of their loved ones through a pain not associated with religion, although both the attack and the loss was truly biblical. As a result, the Families of 9/11 fund was formed to give financial support to ease the pain of such a tragedy.

In the Amish village in Pennsylvania, ten children were held captive; 5 of them murdered. This tragedy reminds me of the events covered in Truman Capote's In Cold Blood, in which a small rural village, mostly untouched by modernity, is made victim by a modern act of crime. The key difference that I saw from the reactions from the family members was that they responded by pointing out their religious beliefs to be of aid to them in times like this. They are clearly in mourning, but they are also in a considerable amount of shock. Unlike America after 9/11, they seem to be less focused on justice or revenge. This may also be due to their religious views.

i dont even think these are comparable...911 was a terrorist attack against the whole country while the amish tragedy was just one nutcase who hated god..though both were extremely unfortunate events i do not believe in 10 years from now we will be discussing the amish tragedy, but we will still be discussing 911.

Ok let me tell you something there is no comparison. Both are horrible and tragic situations that occured because some nut was on the loose from the local macademia farm. Horrible tragedy both were, and my heart and prayers go out to all families of these tragedies.

Anyone dying is a bad thing. I think we should leave the Amish alone. They don't do anything to us, they just have a different lifestyle, and for the most part, the state of PA is trying to keep the Amish isolated and out of the "spotlight".

When there is any loss of life there will always be a reaction! You can not compare these 2 issues.911 was a tradgety and the world will never be the same as we knew it before that horrible day.As for the children who lost their lives from some sick idiot who had it out for women, they are suffering also. Why these families are forgiving him is beyond me but that is their culture.I am sorry for what happened and I wish our children would not have to worry about going to school wondering if they are going to be killed that day! What is wrong with our society!

These aren't comparable events and everyone acted appropriately for their own situation. Think of a better question.
