you don't want a free domain name (unless it comes as part of a paid hosting package). They are blocked by some major ISP's like comcast and very slow when they do work. They also will usually show some sort of adverts on your site or worse - a popup! Real domain names only costs $9/year! but if you still want one try dot.tk

You'll also need what's know as a "web hosting" account on a web server.

Follow the second link below and tell them Texx sent you and you can get web hosting accouny for $99 a year (no setup fee) with all kinds of features.

Ah, but the fun has just begun. You can get a free domain if you are running DSL or a cable modem, and your system is always on! check out the fine folks at http://www.no-ip.info for more information on their services. You will also need to run a server program like Abyss Web Server from Aprelium Technolgies, though there are many other free ones like it on the net at http://www.download.net For an example of running a site from home for free, please feel free to visit mine at http://crownpc.no-ip.info
As for getting it listed in search engines, you have some work to do. Read up on and use Meta-Tags. This is what a search engine crawler will look at when finding your site. Be sure to use the search terms listed there with in the site to show relevancy which gets you higher in the rankings. You can also use services like http://www.addme.com which is not too expensive and you get a lot of link backs from all of the free-for-all pages you get listed on, which also helps your overall ranking. Of course there is angelfire, geocities, etc. They just aren't as easy to get listed on. Another good alternative to a free site is to check out http://www.hostfor2bucks.com I believe this is where I get some of mine from, but the link may be incorrect. They give you the Domain Name when signing up with them for all the same low price. You have to pay for a full year at a time, but well worth the price. That will allow you to FTP your site or upgrade it within the Microsoft FrontPage Enviroment, allowing the use of FrontPage Extensions. An example of a site on their servers can be found at http://www.cortlandpc.com Hope this helps.

A good free host I use is www.freewebs.com. There's no ads on the side and you have a lot of space to put more content on your site with. Knowledge of HTML helps as well to make a better site. I'll show you an example of the kinds of sites you can make using FreeWebs.
