Al DiMeola. He uses very few hammers and pull-offs, yet plays faster and more melodic riffs than anyone else. This requires incredible synchronization between his left and right hands. No other guitartist, especially in rock, even approaches anything like this, with the exception of Steve Howe from the old space-rock band Yes.

next would be jon petrucci. he's a real genius
