problem with your exhaust.
the oxygen sensor reads the emissions and sends a signal to the computer. If the mixture isn't right, the light comes on.
the problem is once this happens, the computer sets the fuel to an open feed loop, and you lose fuel economy.
plus, you will not pass emissions inspections.
solutions:
if it's still under warranty, take it to the dealer.
if not, get it checked at a garage.
a cheap fix is to disconnect the battery for about an hour which will wipe the computer memory clean. then drive and try the a/c.
you have 3 drive cycles before the light should come back on.

good luck

Go to Autozone, and get their free diagnostic done. If none around you, then you'd have to pay for the diagnostic. The check engine light means that the computer, or sensor has detected an issue, and thats what has caused the light to come on. A/C usually doesn't get the check engine light...Not that I've noticed. That could be cause its low on freon. Good luck.

I have a Ford Taurus. The check engine light stays on also but my car's problem is some useless sensor on the transmission. The check engine light might have something to do with your A/C but doubtful.

I have a 1999 Windstar and it does the same - only mine stays on for 45 minutes. I understand that this is not uncommon for Fords made those years. I was told we would have to replace all of the door sensors since the service dept at the dealership is unable to determine exactly which sensor it was.

all old fords do that you have an 02 sensor that has gone out it is an oxygen sensor unfortunately it is going to take a trip to the mechanics shop to fix it. Good Luck to you and get it there soon this could lead to other problems.

My car was doing the same thing, took it in and had the computer check it. They told me it was the O2 sensor, not a big deal from what I was told. I don't think it would affect the AC, you may just need your AC unit charged.

Well, I'd check the engine. LOL!!! Just to see what could be wrong and rule out a weird circuit lightbulb behind the engine light!

TAKE THIS TK TO A GOOD GARAGE .THER THEY WILL PUT A SCANNER ON YOUR TRUCK AND BE ABLE TO TELL YOU WHERE YOUR PROBLEM LIES BY CODES.ONLY THEN AFTER THE REPAIR HAS BEEN DONE WILL THEY RE-SET YOUR CHECK ENGINE LITE.THEN YOU WILL BE GOOD TO GO.THE A/C HAS NOTHING TO DO W/YOUR CHECK ENGINE LITE BENING ON YOU MORE THE LIKELY HAVE A LEAK IN THE A/C SYSTEM.AT A GOOD SHOP THY CAN INSTALL A DYE IN YOUR A/C SYSTEM AND RE-CHARGE IT TO LOCATE THE LEAK.GOOD LUCK
