If we're not using static IP does it mean that our IP will change each time we connect to the network? E.g. if i get one ip today, i shutdown my pc, connect to the network the next day will my ip be the same? If it's the same then why do we need static ip? If its not the same then how is it that we can trace a person using their ip, if their ip changes all the time??

Yes, it will change whenever you connect to an ISP. You are using their IP address stack randomly as you log in or out of it. The Internet Protocol addresses are distributed as one customer logs in and another out. You may get the same one the next day, but most likely not - the IP address choices are random.

It is not necessary for consumers to have a static IP address. In fact, it actually safer for you that you don't - less chance for hackers to compromise your system.

Any IP address can be traced, if you can get it that is. You can only trace an IP address only so far - you can locate their ISP, and that's about it. Law enforcement and the court system.can pursue it further due to privacy laws.

Only a static IP address stays the same. If you host domains or web sites a Static IP is helpful but not necessary.
Also, even though your dynamic IP changes from session to session the ISP's router or server you connect to does not. Therefore you sessions are logged and can always be traced.

Well, You can't assign static IPs for all Internet users, IPs will not be enough for all of them, Only people who need static IPs can ask for static IPs, They need static IPs usually if they gonna assign them to a server or a router or any device that needs to be published using a fixed address that does not change every now and while, Some normal users as well need to assign static IP for their PC because they need to log in to remote machines and these machines has a fire wall that prevents access except from a single IP.

Still ISPs can easily trace anybody if he has a virtual IP by keeping records of who used that IP and when.

The only reason you should need a static IP is if you want to host a website or you have some remote hosting set up for users to connect to your PC. A Static IP never changes and it COSTS more than a simple dynamic IP.

I have Cable internet. My IP changes very rarely even though I am on a Dynamic one. I can get it to change if I unplug my Cable modem and then plug it back in or if my ISP does some update. Sometimes they will reset IP's and it will change then as well.

An IP network is somewhat similar to the telephone network in that you have to have the phone number to reach a destination. The big difference is that IP addresses are often temporary.

Each device in an IP network is either assigned a permanent address (static IP) by the network administrator or is assigned a temporary address (dynamic IP) via DHCP software. Routers, firewalls and proxy servers use static addresses as do most servers and printers that serve multiple users. Client machines may use static or dynamic IP addresses. The IP address assigned to your service by your cable or DSL Internet provider is typically dynamic IP. In routers and operating systems, the default configuration for clients is dynamic IP

Some things need static IP addresses, like servers or network printers. But there's no particular reason for your PC to have a static address. Dynamic addressing allows a smaller block of addresses to service a given group of users, in the expectation that they won't all be online at once all the time. It would require a larger block of addresses for everyone to have a static address no one else could use that belonged only to them. This is why static addresses usually cost more.

I think it depends on how the network is configured. The ISP probably keeps a log of which IP is asigned to who, thats how they trace you.

It depends on your ISP. Some does some doesn't.

You can find out your IP address by going to

notedown and reboot and do the same. If it is different then your ISP gives you different IP for every login.:)
