i met an old aquaintance the other day. we were never the best of friends, he however insisted we went for a pint. as i thought our conversation was plagued by akward silences, which don't bother me but made him squirm, so i encouraged them and enjoyed doing so. do you enjoy or hate them?

For me it's a love hate situation. I happen to think that awkward silences are very amusing. However, they usually make me laugh out loud which makes people think I am laughing at them. The worst one was when I did this when my friends and I were at a party and a young priest came up to us to talk. It was awkward after the initial hellos and I started laughing and he definitely was offended. I certainly hope that doesn't mean I'm going to Hell.

Depends who I'm talking to. With people I don't know particularly well I prefer keeping the awkward silences to a minimum. The skill of a good conversationalist is to cover the awkwardness when it occurs.

With people I don't particularly like, I may actively encourage their discomfort by inserting pregnant pauses or encouraging those awkward moments.

With close relationships it's a different ball game: there's not the constant need to talk talk talk. Being comfortable when silence descends speaks volumes about the nature of the relationship.

I say irrelevant issues so oftentimes, this is anticipated of me. I had cataract surgical treatment in one eye, final week. I had to bypass to the well-being practitioner's place of work the following day to study the attention chart. i replace into so surprised i could study it without glasses, I blurted out Holy Hell! The well-being practitioner chuckled quietly. anybody in the waiting room replace into the two snickering or smiling at me as I left. It appeared like an exceptionally long walk to the door.

I don't mind silence so I never find it embarrassing. If I thought someone else did, I would try to help them out.
