With their wings extended most bird species become very aerodynamic. Their wings are light and they have very fast contracting muscles to beat their wings up and down.
Of course there are some bird species that can not fly for example the penguin and the chicken ( which can jump very high in the air using its wings but can not stay airborne)
The toucan is not a great flyer because its giant beak affects its aerodynamics :p

birds fly because they are light in weight with soft bones. moreover their body structure is created in such a way that as their wings pushes air down and it flies up. wings are also useful to change the direction of flight.
