Click the option to sign in as invisible! Easy solution. Can also use stealth options to appear offline to certain people only.

Usually Most IM programs will give you the option to be invisible to everyone, It will either be an option in your preferences or in the case of yahoo messenger a checkbox when you sign in. You will have to do a little looking to find it.

If it's Yahoo Messenger go to preferences and under privacy select always sign on as invisible

Change your privacy settings in messenger so that when you sign in to your browser, you are always signed in as invisible, then you can do what you want while on line, and only make yourself available when you want.

There should be a log in as hidden command for your messenger, or at least an "away" or "busy" option. Look up your messenger's help file for exact details.

Sign in to MSN as showing Offline....or (I believe) sign in to Yahoo as Invisible.

If you don't want that person to know when you go online in future, block their name. Then you have control over when you want them to see you're online.

before you sign on, check "sign in as invisible" on the panel.
