Hi there,

I am currently trying to teach myself British Sign Language for the school I am working in. I've found a few online resources, but they are all a bit limited... does anyone know of any that are good, and have comprehensive phrases, rather than just words?

Many thanks, no silly answers please as its just annoying!

I tried learning some BSL online, and have certainly learned "SOME". I have supplemented my learning with books from Amazon.co.uk.

If I had more time on my hands, and someone to converse with, I'm sure I'd learn adequately from these.

That site is good for learning to finger spell, which is obviously of great benefit if you don't know the sign for a word, or are spelling a name.

This site is helpful in places, but a lot of the options are locked to force you to buy their CD.

I've also used this site now and again.

This has been my favourite resource. There are some very basic phrases, as well as colours, numbers, weather etc. Quite cute and easy to use.

There aren't any web sites teaching B.S.L. other than basic spelling and words.
It is best taught by a qualified instructor. Courses should be available in your local area.
You can look at www.british-sign.co.uk which has an on line course for very basic signing and cd roms available to buy.or try

BSL has many regional differneces - so someone from Liverpool might not understand someone from Preston, even though they are only a few miles away. So anything you do find might not be directly relevant to your locality. Some signs, especially ones used in academia (schools, colleges, university) are very confusing for a hearing impaired person the first time they are signed to them, so you are best finding a local instructor and getting them to help you.
